Nearly 300,000 taxpayers filed Self Assessment returns in first week
HMRC has confirmed that 298,905 people submitted their Self Assessment tax return for the 2025 to 2026 tax year between 6 and 12 April — in other words, within the very first week after the tax year closed.
If you are a sole trader, landlord, or small business owner who needs to file a Self Assessment return, there is no immediate action required from this announcement. The deadline is not imminent, but the figures are a reminder that filing early is perfectly possible and can help you avoid a last-minute rush.
For those preparing for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, getting into the habit of keeping digital records up to date throughout the year will make early filing easier when MTD requirements come into force.
