HMRC updates guidance on online services available to tax agents

HMRC has updated the online services section of its tax agents handbook. The guidance covers the tools agents can use on your behalf, including the Self Assessment and PAYE for Agents online services, multi-factor authentication, calculators, and the HMRC app.

The page also flags where to check for any current service issues or downtime — useful to know if your agent is chasing something on your account and hitting a problem.

No action is needed from sole traders, landlords, or small businesses as a result of this update. If you use an accountant or bookkeeper, they are the main audience for this guidance. It may be worth mentioning it to them if you have been experiencing delays with any HMRC online service.
